c. 640 pages. Eleven folding copper engraved plates, including 3 maps.

Includes a small World map in double hemispheres depicting California as an island (evidently not known to Shirley), with inset view of Paradise.

A delightful decorative map of the Holy Land displays grape cluster and figures cartouche, plus an interesting city plan of Jerusalem titled Jerosolymae Veteris. Also includes two ethnographic views of Jewish high clergy, both priests and instruments.

Period full mottled calf leather binding. Spine compartments richly gilt stamped, raised bands. Early manuscript index to front pastedown.

Period full leather binding well age worn, but still sewn and sound. Joints cracked, covers firmly held by original binding cords and hinges. Contents tight, mostly clean, plates fresh, nice dark impressions.

A well known 17th century work by Bernard Lamy, a famous French mathematician and theologian. The volume contains an introduction to the Bible with numerous illustrations of Biblical scenes and personages. Written by a member of the Catholic Church.
