Splendidly preserved and rare mid-19th century American atlas set contains 109 mostly hand-colored maps, plates and views.

1857. pp. 239. Contains 42 plates total, most with original hand color. Includes six historical world maps, 8 b& w views, 26 colored maps and a wonderful large folding ethnographic plate.
The Western Hemisphere, American- by Charles Colby, A.M.
1859. pp. 239. (Revised edition). Contains 67 hand colored maps and plates, including pictorial diagrams and views, eleven scientific thematic maps, 8 b& w views and 46 colored maps relating to all the individual states, regions and countries of the hemisphere.
Both published New York by Samuel N. Gaston, 1857-9. Text by Colby & Morse. Printed by E.O. Jenkins. Cerographic maps, hand colored pictorial half titles.
Period full red leather, ornately and elaborately gilt stamped and decorated covers and spines, all edges gilt. Rear covers with nude god leading horse drawn chariot set within scrolled decorative filigree borders. Profusion of hand colored maps throughout, many individual states. The splendid large folding ethnographic plate tipped in at rear appears to be supplemental to the set.
Overall bindings remain sound and with bright shelf appearance. Slightly shaken from browsing but still well bound as issued. Light surface rubbing or scuffing, tiny chip at head of one spine, slight fraying to ends, small minor scattered spotting, overall an immensely pleasing set.
Wonderful age patina overall, scarce to rare in this pleasing condition.
Map of Washington & Oregon Territories slightly damaged with small loss to top right corner, blank margins trimmed slightly, map tipped in.
Books measure: 7 1/2" H X 6 3/4" W.
Set along the shelf measures: 2 3/4".
