Die Bibel Alten und Neuen Testaments, von Wilhelm Fredrich Hezel. Twelve volumes bound into eleven, complete (with Apocrypha).
Issued 1786-1800, Lemgo (Germany), im Berlage der Menerschen Buchhandlung.
Lovely, handsome set in period European 1/2 leather bindings. Smooth spines with large contrasting red morocco gilt lettered and ornamented title labels, all covers marbled.
Leather remains supple, bindings overall clean and tight. First volume has front cover joint cracked, thus this board loosened but still firmly attached by binding cords, all other volumes sound & tight. Minor chipping at a couple spine ends, never offensive nor severe.
Text in two columns, numerous large woodcuts throughout, loose early engraved portrait of the author of the commentator/ compiler laid in.
Rare set issued over a period of 15 years, in early bindings, with unique and attractive age patina impossible to recreate new.
Books measure: 8" H X 5 1/4" W.
Set along the shelf measures: 18 3/4".
All are complete, clean and well preserved examples.
