Indian Wars of the United States, from the Discovery to the Present Time. With Accounts of the Origin, Manners, Superstitions &c of the Aborigines, by William V. Moore (John Frost).
Published 1856, Philadelphia, by Jas. B. Smith & Co.
328 pages. Eight hand colored Indian plates, profusion of many dozens of wood engravings.

Beautiful old 1/2 leather binding, raised bands and gilt spine lettering, marbled end papers.

This work contains a brief overview of the indigenous population prior to first contact with the Europeans before embarking on a painstaking description of a seemingly endless series of bloody war. With a patronizing style, this volume can be difficult at times for modern sensibilities. Contains numerous illustrations as well depicting scenes of violence interspersed with portraits, sometimes hand colored portraits of chiefs and leaders.

Binding remains sound & tight. Joints scuffed, frontis detached, former library example with old rubbed discard stamp and evidence of call numbers to spine compartment, book plate removed from front pastedown.

Still a handsome looking book with a pleasing overall age patina.

Book measures: 9" H X 6" W.
