A prolific New Hampshire antiquarian, Samuel Drake attempts to construct a history of the indigenous American Indian population from first contact with Europeans to the time of publishing. Sympathetic to the troubles of the indigenous peoples, Drake takes care to present his subjects as humans worthy of compassion and attention.
Work includes an alphabetical list of all known tribes, along with their population, location, and any political allegiances (war, confederation, etc). Book also contains 12 full page engraved portraits of indigenous leaders. A fascinating and valuable work with an extensive detailed index at rear.
Binding rubbed and gently sunned, spine ends worn and slightly frayed. Plates show some foxing, signature in middle of book slightly protruding. Overall sound, tight, clean example, spine gilt remains bright, book has nice age patina.
