Brieven, Geschreven ende gewisselt tusschen de Heer Johan de Witt. [sesde deel].
Published 1725, 'sGravenhage (The Hague), by Hendrick Scheurleer.
614 pages. Text in Dutch.
Splendid period [likely Dutch] full leather binding, raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, covers with elaborate and beautifully gilt designs, marbled end papers.
Odd volume, number six of a set, but the work is a compilation of letters so this volume contains all the letters he wrote from May 1659- Aug. 1667, so contents complete unto themselves.
Interior shows some moderate old fore-edge damp staining foxing. Front hinge cracked, but binding remains tight and sound. Book retains a handsome shelf appearance despite the darkened spine and slightly crackled gilt.
Beautiful age patina impossible to recreate. Any age flaws are easy to overlook or forgive.
Beautiful antiquarian object. A collection of letters from Johan de Witt, the leader of the Netherlands from 1653-1672, the height of the Dutch Golden Era. Excellent source in a truly beautiful period ornate European leather binding.
As an aside it should be mentioned de Witt was lynched by a crowd and was then eaten by them!
Book measures: 10" H X 8" W.
