8 volume set, each volume c. 200 pages. Profusely illustrated throughout, extensive list of plates in each volume, approx. 300 full page art plates within the set.
Illustrations methods include original etchings, photogravures, wood engravings and typogravures. All illustrations with lettered tissue guards, each quoting the literary passage which serves as the source of the image shown.
Period 1/2 grained leather, spines gilt lettered and decoratively stamped, front cover gilt lettering, silk moire end papers, all edges gilt.
Bindings remain tight and sound, stately and handsome shelf appearance. Leather remains supple, overall appearance is fresh and bright, all small flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Mostly clean and free of spotting, a much nicer than typical plate book set for the era, with a profusion of illustrations, many original works of nicely printed art.
Books measure: 12" H X 9 1/2" W.
