Period mid-18th century mottled calf leather binding, spine compartments gilt decorated in lovely floral pattern, title gilt lettered on contrasting red morocco leather band, covers ruled in gilt outline, marbled end papers, all edges gilt.
Hinges cracked, spine scuffed with thin cracking down backstrip, but binding remains tight and sound, both covers strongly & firmly attached.
Interior clean and mostly free of spotting or foxing. Lovely frontis engraving, two other masterful full page engravings by Sessard after Cochin, and several small chapter heading engravings throughout.
Lovely pocket edition of the works of the Roman historian Sallust. Contains a brief biography of Sallust, his works on the Conspiracy of Cataline and the Jugurtha's war against Sulla, several letters and fragments of surviving histories.
At rear is a bibliographic reference describing previous editions of the work published from 1471 to 1760.
Attractive looking book, nice age patina.
