Embellished with above 330 biblical steel engravings.
Beautiful period full red grained morocco leather bindings. Raised bands, gilt rules and lettering, covers in gilt outline rules with original owners name in gilt to front covers. gilt decorated turn-ins, marbled end papers, all edges gilt. Profusion of beautiful small, near miniature engravings relating to Bible history. Color litho half title.
Each engraving is set within an ornate border and surrounded by text pages to explain it and the next one. An astonishing example of a plate book aimed at younger readers in the middle of the 19th century.
The engravings are all well engraved in detail and richly printed.
Leather remains supple, bindings are handsome with nice shelf appeal. Joints lightly scuffed, various minor age flaws to leather, overall a pleasing set. Internally- some scattered mostly minor or localized damp staining to some pages (typically in corner or margins), folding frontis view plate in two pieces along fold-line.
Any age flaws are easy to forgive or overlook. While not particularly rare, the work is not typically found in such appealing full gilt morocco bindings of the era.
