Book box Secret compartment 1751-4 pair 2 old French leather booksBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
Pair of beautiful mid-18th century full leather European books. Attractive shelf appearance, bindings gilt decorated, one of the books hollowed out and lined with matching old marbled paper long ago to create a secret compartment book box.
Engraved allegorical frontis by J.P. Le Bas to one vol.
Both show signs of time and age but leather remains supple, book box has a cracked front joint but cover still firmly attached, corner tips worn, both remain sound, tight and attractive on the shelf.
Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the pair. Nicer than typical for the type and era.
