Compendious System of Universal Geography, designed for schools by Elijah Parish.
Published Newburyport, 1807 by Thomas & Whipple.
pp. 212.

Original leather spine, wooden boards.

Offered as a fascinating example of how early 19th century American school books books can survive.  Repaired and worn to the point of being a curiosity. The early/ original owner Jessie Smith has signed her name in decorative calligraphy on the final leaf with a four line verse below.

A one-of-a-kind survival in a condition impossible to recreate or fake, just handled and used so much it makes you wonder why someone saved it so long and how it got this way. Covers broken, half gone, original wood or rear cover exposed, old newspaper page used to repair front cover, dog earred, toned, stained, etc.. Almost a random work of "book as an object" art.

In coin collecting, the equivalent of a book in this condition would be collecting by date the lowest grade known of say Morgan silver dollars, trying to find the most worn example of each date that survives.

Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this antique item survives. A fascinating relic of an early American object.

Book Measures c. 7 "H x 4 1/2"W.
