Panorama of the Old World and the New, by William Pinnock.
1854, Boston, L. P. Crown & Co. pp. 616.
Contains approx 1000 woodcut illustrations, many full or half-page. Twenty-four (24) full-page hand-colored woodcut plates, most with original tissue guards.
Embossed publishers full leather, covers with intricate decorative embossed Victorian era patterning. Spine pictorially gilt stamped and lettered, including a rising sun with rays and a scholar seated before a room-sized world globe.
Beautiful example, exhibiting less than usual signs of age and handling, great pictorial spine.
Joints cracked with some thin separations, but leather remains supple and covers still firmly attached, boards well holding. Binding remains sound.
Text block tight and mostly clean- light scattered spotting or foxing throughout. Binding lightly age rubbed, joints cracked, leather lightly worn but with excellent age patina and visual appeal.
Marbled end papers and edges, a profusion of wood-cuts throughout, all delightfully primitive in nature, executed in a manner entirely unique to this mid-century American era.
Overall a nice antiquarian book with a profusion of hand-colored and b&w plates.
Book measures: 9 1/4" H X 6 1/2" W.
