Africae Descriptio.

(Africa- Continents).

[Re]issued 1626, London, Stansby for Purchase in his monumental and rare Relations of the World . [first appearance 1607, Amsterdam] -Cartography by J. Hondius.

Uncommon early 17th century miniature map, first engraved 1607, one of several variant imprints, all using this same plate (see Betz).

Strapwork title cartouche at bottom left, two sailing ships, sea monstser beside a distance scale lower right. Text on verso as always [here English, p. 619-20].

Fascinating example of an early 17th century Dutch copper-engraved plate moving from Holland to London, thus being used by different publishers continuously over a 30+ year period.

Left side of sheet neatly backed with matching paper, slight show-through.

Longitude and latitude graduations surround the map, mostly speculative cartography.

Sheet measures c. 12"H x 8"W.

Printed area measures c. 6"H x 7 1/2"W.
