Japan Japanese islands 1607 Hondius 1626 Purchas scarce miniature re-issue mapBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian
(Asia- Chinese Ocean- Japanese Islands).
[Re]issued 1626, London for Purchase in his monumental and rare Relations of the World . [first appearance 1607, Amsterdam] -Cartography by J. Hondius.
Very uncommon early 17th century miniature map, first engraved 1607, one of several variant imprints, all using this same plate.
Compass rose and Germany military mile distance scale set within strapwork title cartouche at bottom right. Text on verso as always [here English, p. 587-8].
Fascinating example of an early 17th century Dutch copper-engraved plate moving from Holland to London, thus being used by different publishers continuously over a 30+ year period.
Map remains clean and pleasing, free of any defects worthy of note. Excellent example.
Longitude and latitude graduations surround the map, zig-zag lines within oceans, tiny city symbols and note worthy period erroneous outlines and shapes.
Sheet measures c. 7 1/4"H x 7 1/2"W.
Printed area measures c. 5"H x 6 1/2"W.
