Japan 1712 Moll Company's Land of Jesso rare miniature map imaginary cartographyBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
Japon or Niphon. The Land of Jesso and Straits of the Vries &c.
(Asia / Japan/ Inset of Ladrone Islands/ Company's Land/ Land of Jesso/ Corea).
Issued 1712, London by Herman Moll.
Delightful early 18th century miniature map. Splendid example of imaginary or apocryphal cartography. Imaginary, unknown and incorrect cartography all intersect on this delightful and uncommon little map.
Giant imaginary Land of Jesso with undefined coastal outline rises above Japan with no defined northern border. East of Jesso is the imaginary "Straits of Vries" which lead to the imaginary Company's Land. Korea (Corea) is named within mainland China but not shown in any manner, neither a peninsula nor island.
Light uniform paper age toning, one fold-line with age staining, original fold lines, remaining clean - bottom blank edge nicely extended with old paper as seen in scans and video- overall remains a pleasing and well preserved visual example.
Sheet measures c. 5 1/4" x 7 5/8".
Printed area measures c. 4 7/8" x 6 7/8".
