(Oceania, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, New Guinea, Captain Cook voyage).
Issued 1773, London by Hawkesworth. Engraved by W. Whitchurch.
Beautiful large 18th century antique map detailing Captain Cook's first voyage in 1769 across the Pacific. An early depiction of Australia from a cartographic point, note the profusion of names along the east coast. Van Diemens island still shown as attached to the continent.
Light uniform paper age toning, small spotting or light old damp staining in spots, never visually offensive and scarcely worthy of mention, original fold lines, remaining clean - a pleasing and well preserved visual example. Narrow side blank margin top right is as issued (to facilitate folding of the map).
Sheet measures c.16 3/8" H x 27 3/8" W.
Printed area measures c. 14" H x 24 1/4" W.
