Map of the New Oreleans Guide
of James S. Zacharie
(Louisiana- urban plans)
Issued 1885, New Orleans by Southern Litho Company.
Rare oversized 19th century antique city plan issued around the time of a major Expo held within the city. Lithographed map with hand color.
Laid down on sturdy archival backing paper, expertly hand colored for an outstanding visual quality. Some thin strips or spots of loss along fold-lines, old spotting and staining as seen, despite condition issues (largely due to huge folding size), map still displays very well and is entirely worthy of framing and display.
Insets top right of three expo buildings, including one made of glass. Plan of city in 1770 below these.
Street directory index in 7 columns lower right, title top left contains a key below it listing the number of races found within the city at this date, including "whites", "colored", "Indians" (11) and "Chinese"(of which there were evidently 95). Boats within the Mississippi river, many specific buildings named, etc.
Paper is uniformly age-toned with darkening around the edges; light scattered spotting; otherwise clean.
Original fold lines as issued.
Sheet measures c. 27 3/4" x 29 1/8".
Engraved area measures c. 28 1/4" x 26 1/2".
