Reis-Kaart van het Britsche Gezantschap van Zhe-Hol in Tartarye over Peking Naar Hang-Choe-Foe in China.

(Asia, China, Shandong Province, Beijing, Peking, Yangtzee River, Yellow Sea).

Issued 1799-1800, Amsterdam by J. Allart.

Excellent and very uncommon late 18th-turn of the 19th century antique engraved Dutch map of the Chinese coast based upon English surveys under Macartney.

Map identifies a number of pagodas and temples as well as a host of engraved comments. Numerous early phonetic place names, various engraved notes & comments in Dutch, all of fascinating modern historical interest. Key lower left side showing population ranges of size as they relate to the symbols and names used.

Peking (Beijing- Tong-Choe-Foe) can be seen near the top left of the map. Yang-Choe-Foe, Tsin-Jin-Choe- Sjang-Tung, Pe-Che are a few of the names shown. Yellow Sea lower right corner, nautical ship tracks of voyage shown with anchorage spot. Distance scales below title given in English & Chinese miles.

A scarce/ rare map. Almost certainly printed in an edition under 1000 examples. The source is obscure and rare, clean fresh examples such as this seldom encountered.

Minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, but overall a superior visual example. Original fold-lines and lower left margin trimmed narrow to neat line as issued to facilitate folding, the top portion being an inset tab. Short closed split at the inset tab, of minimal concern and almost inevitable on maps with this original folding inset format.

Original fold lines as issued.

Sheet measures c. 11" x 16 1/2".

Engraved area measures c. 10 1/2" x 14 1/2".
