Map of the Territory of the United States
From the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean
Ordered by the Hon. Jeff'n Davis. Secretary of War

Lieut. G.K. Warren & Maj. Emory...

(Exploration & mapping of America West of Mississippi river)

Issued Washington, D.C., 1854-7 by U.S. Gov. Railroad Survey. Eng. & Litho. by Siebert.

A monumental mid-19th century map issued under the directions of Lt. Warren, Jefferson Davis, Maj. Emory and other U.S. Government Departments.

Widely authoritatively considered to be the most signficant mapping of the Western American continent until this date.

Wheat* devotes a remarkable eight full pages to discussing it and describes it as the historical cartographic pinnacle of the era. Warren displayed an energy, zeal and mastery of synthesis in the creation of this map impossible prior to his task.

Captures the American West to the Pacific coast with a level of detail and accuracy previously unknown and unmapped thus.

Map remains mostly well preserved aside from top left panel region (original inset panel).

Like all U.S. government maps issued for the Railroad survey explorations across the country in the middle of the century, this map was printed on a relatively thin and fragile lithographic paper. Two huge sheets, joined along the middle as issued.

This paper is now visibly age-toned along the fold lines, and must be unfolded & handled with some care.

Top left single panel cleanly ripped through due to being an inset tab and the weight of the folded map stressing the paper; this long tear throught the panel now temporarily closed with archival tape on reverse. Some small loss along the age browned short top left fold line as well, representing where the map was exposed to time when folded up as issued.

Priced to reflect condition as described above, worthy of professional archival backing.

Original fold lines as issued; map still largely clean & fresh internally, appears to have rarely been unfolded over the years.

A gargantuan wall map which often displays restoration, this example entirely acceptable for most connoisseurs, collectors & institutions unless one seeks extremely fine.

Sheet measures c. 47" x 47" (almost 4 feet x 4 feet).

Printed area measures c. 42' x 45".

Goetzman called the publication of the original 1857 edition "an event comparable in importance to publication of Lewis and Clark's first reports, Warren's map marked the culmination of six decades of effort to comprehend the outlines of western geography… Compared to Warren's map, all previous works of a general nature on the trans-Mississippi West are mere sketches." * Cohen & Taliaferro description, found OldMaps online price record.
