Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the atlas. Nicer than typical for the type of book and era.

1881, Paris, J. Migeon.
Splendid 19th century world atlas. Complete with 41 maps, which include a celestial double hemisphere, 6 historical ancient world maps, two world maps, each of the continents, regional, Colonial, etc. Many with fine vignette views, all maps fully hand colored.
Period 1/4 leather binding, spine richly and beautifully gilt stamped and decorated as are covers. Marbled endpapers, all maps folded as issued, each map with separate descriptive text sheet (sometimes more than one). Pictorial title page depicts Cybele, goddess of Towns surrounded by symbolic representations of the Arts, Sciences, Agriculture and War. Sailing, railroad and balloon depict travel in air, by land and on sea.
Very clean, pleasing survival, bright, any age flaws easy to forgive or overlook. About as nice an example as one could hope to encounter.
Book measures: 14 1/4" H X 11" W. Thick small folio.
