European Grand Tour 1884 Ralph Emerson scrapbook financial banking city plansBrian DiMambro- Antique & Vintage Maps, Prints, Books & Gold Coins
Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the item. Nicer than typical for the type.
European Grand Tour/ vacation scrapbook album of Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Emerson. (Italy- France- England).
Scrapbook- Mark Twain, 1881. Green cloth, Victorian decorative covers and spine.
Trip begins with letter of Credit from Chicago Bank, 27 Dec. 1883 and continues through early May 1884.
Unique album recording the financial under-pinnings of a grand tour trip to Europe in the first three months of 1884 for a U.S. citizen (Illinois resident) visiting Europe and returning as a (wealthy) tourist. Approx. 29 pages with printed items affixed, often multiple items on a page. Includes rare early official decorative bank checks, unique rare small pocket sized city plans, early telegrams & cables, etc.
Starting with an initial letter of credit from the First National Bank of Chicago of Five Hundred pounds sterling (good for 1 year), various bills and printed ephemeral souvenir items fill the scrapbook. Many relate to the steamships used in crossing (including a private cabin on the main deck) and the banking financial documents necessary for the trip to happen.
A fascinating historical contrast of an era when travel outside the U.S. involved much official stamped paperwork, stamps, signatures and so on, to the modern era, when global mobility is assumed and relatively painlessly easy, requiring little more than plastic cards linked with instant friction-less digital connections. Scan your eye, carry your phone & passport, off you go.
The album shows signs of age, is worn and perhaps lacking some of the original contents. Impossible to say, offered as acquired and shown in short video.
A unique survival thus, one of a kind item. If this was a family relative, it would be priceless.
Book measures: 12" H X 10 1/4" W.
