Milton's Paradise Lost Poetical Works 1832 American leather book beautifulBrian DiMambro- Antique & Vintage Maps, Prints, Books & Gold Coins
Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the book. Much nicer than typical for the era and type of American full leather binding.
Paradise Lost, A Poem in Twelve Books. by John Milton.
1832, New York, John H. Turney. pp. 232. [with] Poetical Works. Two works bound in one (see video).
Period red morocco, spine gilt ruled and ornamented compartments, covers with double outline gilt rules containing a running floriate pattern. Board edges, gilt stamped, beautiful marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Two engraved half titles and one frontis.
Lovely American binding of the era displaying the almost folk-art hand work of bindery craftsmen. Sound, tight book, scattered foxing throughout (never severe or offensive), leather remains supple, gilt bright, pleasing state of preservation, nice age patina. Unique, superior and rare example thus.
Book measures: 6 3/4" H X 4 3/8" W.
