Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the set.
Much nicer than typical for the type of 19th century monumental leather bindings.
Picturesque America; or, the Land We Live In, Vol. 1 & 2. by W.C. Bryant.
1872, New York, by Appleton.
Publishers decoratively embossed grained morocco full leather, covers splendidly gilt stamped with title and artist's easels in high-Victorian style.
All edges gilt, profusely illustrated throughout with 49 steel engraved plates [all printed on thick heavy paper with tissue guards] and over 900 wood engravings by a wide variety of talented artists of the era, including many by Harry Fenn.
The extensive series of nearly 50 steel-engraved views are famous and include prospect views of numerous major cities in the country, plus many key scenic locations and vistas. Many of the wood engraved views are full page and splendid in execution and include urban views of locations such as San Francisco, New Orleans, Texas, Colorado, the Rocky Mts., Native Americans, etc..
Set remains fresh, clean and bright in appearance both inside and out. Leather is slightly scuffed in a few spots, but remains supple, rich and very pleasing in appearance. A superior set, a work which is far more frequently encountered with varoous sorts of condition issues, such as detached covers, mis-matched or lesser quality original binding types, well foxed, etc.
Sets in this type of beautiful antiquarian condition are within a small minority and should be considered apart from the rest. It would be difficult to upgrade to nicer condition from this set and of no real benefit.
