Period embossed publishers decorative full leather binding. Smooth spine richly gilt stamped with pictorial devices and lettering, including a scholar seated before a giant floor globe. Marbled end papers and edges.
Text block displaying visible old damp staining throughout- see video. Scattered age spotting, otherwise remaining tight, clean and sound. Book still displays a fine age patina and is pleasing to browse through. Fascinating cultural commentary and perspectives which unwittingly capture the many various types of biases prevalent in America during this historical era.
Colored plates are of historical bibliographic interest, representing an early use of extensive color lithography in American book publishing. Slightly askew color registration is often visible with careful examination throughout, unintentionally capturing the technical difficulties of the printing images in color.
