Yellowstone Park 1874 large map proposed railroad line travel book rarityBrian DiMambro- Antique & Vintage Maps, Prints, Books & Gold Coins
The Illustrated Library of Travel, Exploration and Adventure. Wonders of the Yellowstone, by James Richardson.
Issued 1874, New York by Scribner, Armstrong, and Company. "New Edition, with new map and illustrations".
pp. 256. Large folding lithographed (pocket format) with full original hand color.
Map titled: "...Yellowstone National Park and its Prospective Railroad Connection with the Eastern States".
Complete, clean, bright gilt, well preserved example.
With the excellent detailed map of the still proposed and unbuilt northern transcontinental rail line. This final route across the nation to the Pacific ocean is noted in the title, placing it among a hand-full of such maps of the era. This third rail line was completed in Montana, 1883 with President U. Grant & various dignitaries in attendance.
Rare thus, present example is much nicer than typical for any gilt embossed pictorial publisher bindings of this era. Especially more so with the fragile large oblong fold-out pocket map still within as issued, a fresh clean example as well.
A cartographic condition rarity and a beautiful antiquarian book.
Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the item.
Book measures: 7 3/4" H X 5 1/2" W.
