Cosmography climate water world diagram 1552 Munster woodcut hand color printBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian
(Cosmography- geography- zones of climate- water & oceans- medieval diagrams of earthy & world).
Issued c.1552-54, Basel, Switzerland by S. Munster for a very early issue of his monumental Cosmography Compendium describing the known world as it was known at this time.
Charming mid-16th century wood engraved image, printed by hand c.1552 and with very early, likely original hand color(!). while most Munster woodcut images were printed and issued uncolored, a small percentage received the very labor intensive and expensive application of coloring by hand. This is one of those few examples, far scarcer than generally appreciated in the market place.
Paper and image remains clean and well preserved with a fine patina and visual appeal, light typical signs of age on a sheet of paper now over 475 years old. Virtually all Munster woodcut images were issued in the context of letterpress text, thus text around and on reverse of the image.
Sheet measures c. 12"H x 7 3/4"W.
Printed area measures c. 4 1/2"H x 4 1/8"W.
