Pacific East Indies Hoornse island battle 1645 Janszoon le Maire harbor viewBrian DiMambro- Antiquarian Books, Maps & Prints
Isle de Hoorn.
(Wallis & Futuna (?), Pacific Islands).
Issued Amsterdam, 1645 by Jan Janszoon.
Wonderful mid 17th century copper-engraved birds-eye view of a harbor in one of these Pacific Islands visited by the Dutch in May of 1616. Nicely detailed, with numerous sailing ships, as well as buildings and individual people on shore.
Engraving includes the original text leaf, which is a key sheet. This key sheet specifically identifies each of the features seen in the view, which are marked with tiny letters.
In near VG, mostly clean condition. Some moderate toning -- mainly to margins and not infringing on engraved area -- as well as some very gentle scattered spotting. Otherwise sheet remains clean and remarkably well-preserved overall.
Sheet measures c. 9 1/8" W x 7 1/8" H.
Engraved area measures c. 8 3/4" W x 5 5/8" H.
