Oceania or Pacific Ocean.
(Oceania, Australia, European Colonies, Polynesia, Pacific Islands).
Issued Philadelphia, 1848 by S.A. Mitchell.
Not to be confused with more common later variants, the original hand coloring on this example has age mellowed to a beautiful glow.
This early version includes mention of Cook's death on Sandwich islands, small inset of Wilkes' Discoveries along the Antarctic continent, color coded key showing European colonies and "Botany Bay Colony" along Australian coastline in NSW. An explanation key left of the title notes how place names which are underlined denote those areas where Christian missionaries have had the most success (converting and propagating religion).
Sheet measures c. 17" x 13 1/2".
Printed area measures c. 14 3/4" x 12".
