Secret compartment book box c.1850 large folio size leather book silk fabric giltBrian DiMambro- Antique & Vintage Maps, Prints, Books & Gold Coins
Beautiful rare 19th century folio leather bound secret compartment book-box.
Likely created Europe, perhaps England, c. 1840-60.
Rare and very pleasing likely mid-19th century folio-sized secret compartment box, here cleverly disguised as a handsome leather bound book.
A unique, desirable and rare survival. (The ratio of folio format 19th century secret book boxes to 8vo format is almost certainly 4 or 5 to one, and those smaller ones are all unique and rare as well).
Essentially a beautiful hand-made toy object, expertly hand crafted, the "textblock" edges in fact wood work that is beautifully joined and gold gessued like a picture frame.
Overall, very appealing antique artifact and in remarkably well preserved condition. Excellent age patina, likely creating a condition rarity: [various [mostly minor] signs of time and handling, all of which somehow enhance the appearance for modern eyes].
Spectacular spine intricately and decoratively gilt stamped, covers both splendidly presented. Boards ornately outline ruled with repetitive geometrical patterns and corner urn devices, superior tree calf boards. Inner covers with splendid intricate gilt dentelle work, cushioned endpapers and lining of the book in original (clean) period 19th century silk moire fabric.
Appears to be a rare oversized book box survival from an undoubtedly wealthy owners library.
Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the item.
Book measures: 15 1/8" H X 12 1/4" W.
