[Holy Bible, 19th Century Illustrated Pulpit Bible].
Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the monumental book.
Family Bible, Containing the Sacred Text of the Old and New Testaments. With the Apocrypha at Large, Illustrated with Notes and Annotations Selected from the Writings of Scott, Poole, Henry, Brown, Clarke, and Wesley.
Published 1822, Boston by Joseph Teal.
c. 2500 pages.
Well illustrated throughout with approx. 40 maps and engravings.
A monumental book, almost certainly among the largest bibles issued in the United States by this time. A very popular edition which had approx. 3000 subscribers when it was initially issued loose in parts.
Found here in a remarkable period binding in full mottled calf leather, raised bands, spine gilt lettered with elaborate floral compartment decorations; covers richly gilt ruled with various ornate rules in gilt and blind, fine marbled end papers, copper engraved plates & maps. Likely a unique, one-of-a-kind example.
Clearly a deluxe binding when done, among the more (most) expensive books produced during this era.
Book weighs c.18 pounds, measures 4" thick, one and a half feet tall; a landmark feat of hand-crafted paper making, printing and workshop book-binding difficult to fully appreciate today.
Front cover detached, but binding otherwise remains sound and tight. A huge volume that likely required the use of a lectern to fully appreciate (and a wheel barrow to move around).
Book measures: 17 3/4" H X 11" W.
