Book is richly decoratively embossed in blind with ornate patterns, dragon motifs in corners of covers, Celtic, Medieval revival or perhaps Art Nouveau aesthetic to the ornamental designs. Elaborate, fancy, premium binding of the 1870-1880's era in American book shops. Rare thus.
Spine gilt lettered with raised bands, compartment devices in blind, cover edges gilt ruled, turn-ins with splendid tiny star patterning and saw tooth edges surrounding beautiful marbled endpapers. All edges of text block gilt.
Many in-text line drawings and full page wood engravings throughout by Joseph Pennell and others.
Book measures: 9 1/4" H X 7" W.
This example survives with a beautiful age patina, overall exceedingly pleasing example, some small scuffing along joints and a tiny hole in one spine compartment which is easy to forgive or overlook.
Exceptional binding, beautiful antiquarian book. Much nicer than typical for the type of binding and era.
