The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans. Engravings by James B. Longacre and James Herring.
Published 1834-40 (issued over a period of years), Philadelphia by Henry Perkins.
4 volumes, complete. With 154 fine steel engraved portraits protected by original tissue guard, including pictorial engraved half titles.
Period publishers deluxe 1/2 leather bindings, raised bands, gilt and embossed compartment decorations, gilt title lettering, all edges gilt.
Joints and spots of the raised bands ever so slightly scuffed or rubbed, but bindings remain fresh, sound, tight and in beautiful condition. Text blocks remain clean, tight, and sound. Interior contents display a pleasing age patina, some very minor scattered age spotting throughout. Any age flaws are minor and easy to overlook or forgive.
A exceptionally pleasing four volume set which retains a wonderful shelf appearance. Striking nuanced engraved portraits executed at a remarkable level of skill.
Certainly among the finer examples one could ever hope to encounter of this famous and well known monumental early 19th century set.

Set along the shelf measures: 6 1/2".
