North America Mormons & Unmapped territorial West c.1846 Betts rare mapBrian DiMambro- Antique & Vintage Maps, Prints, Books & Gold Coins
Issued London, c.1846 by Betts at 115, Strand for his folio " London Modern Atlas ".
Attractive and quite scarce mid-19th century lithographed folio sheet map, with original hand color. Decorative floral and foliate patterned border.
Fascinating depiction of the empty "Great Basin" and "Territory" (so called) in the American West, which is almost blank aside from a few tentative rivers and lakes. Still no sign of mountain ranges west of the Rockies. Just south of the Salt Lake is seen evidence of a " Mormon F(ort)" settlement. Alaska still Russian America, Canada is here British Territory.
In good, mostly clean condition. Paper moderately to heavily toned with heavy scattered foxing, short closed tear at bottom margin which extends to border area, couple tiny pin-holes in side margin/ border where the lithographer pinned the sheet down prior to printing.
Overall remaining attractive with nice age patina.
Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers has only a short entry on this small British publisher and there is no mention of this address nor an atlas of this title in their entry for him.
