(Early American Frontier map)

Issued 1805, London by John Cary.

Attractive and desirable early 19th century antique engraved map with original outline hand color. Depicts the area in a unique manner.

Depicts the early American frontier as it began to expand westward with vigor. The present-day states of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and part of Minnesota are all contained within the vast unsettled Western Territory around the Great Lakes. Within Lake Superior we see a prominent imaginary Philippeaux island. Numerous captions describe navigation on the Great Lakes, rivers and portages western boundary of present day Michigan incorrect. Indian boundary line 1795 by General Wayne shown.

Bounty Land Grants for the Illinois Company and the Wabash Company are named near the Illinois and Wabash rivers, Col. Henderson's grant in Kentucky, Jersey Company near St. Louis. Navigational and historical notes are scattered throughout the map, and roads are well-delineated.

Assorted historical notations include describing the southern Kentucky region as discovered by J. Macbride in 1754, then explored by Daniel Boon in 1769, and settled by Boon and 'five others' in 1773 for the first settlement of the state.

Paper and image remains clean and well preserved with a fine patina and visual appeal. Beautiful clean example.
