Wonderful mid-18th century encyclopedia set, with over 200 engraved plates throughout covering a wide range of topics. A compendium of the state of knowledge and technology during this era in Europe.
Period full speckled calf leather bindings, spines richly gilt ornamented, marbled end papers, profusion of plates, many folding.
Lovely set, great age patina, any flaws easy to overlook or forgive. One spine title label chipped, one text leaf with small blank margin edge piece missing, trivial age flaws, overall clean, tight and sound.
Uncommon complete and so well preserved, a very nice looking monumental set.
Contents as follows: Vol. 1- insects & birds; vol. 2- plants, vegetation & gardens; v. 3- plants, boats and fish; v.4- maps & celestial diagrams (zodiac); v. 5- mathematics and machinery; v. 6- assorted crafts and skilled work; v. 7- letters & typography, crafts; v.8- various.
