Sporting Scenes and Sundry Sketches: Being the Miscellaneous Writings of J. Cypress, Jr.  Edited by Frank Forester.
Published 1842, New York by Gould, Banks, & Co.
2 Volumes, each c. 250 pages. Four engraved plates, three folding.Text in English. J. Cypress was the pseudonym of William Post Hawes.

First appearance in print of the once popular juvenile sporting adventure author "Frank Forester" [Henry William Herbert].

Old, likely 19th century 1/2 leather bindings, raised and gilt bands, gilt lettering, beautiful marbled covers and end papers. Nice early custom owners book plates of John W. Griggs.

Front cover of both volumes detached, leather along joints dried, extremities and edges scuffed, but text blocks internally remains clean, tight, and sound. The age flaws are relatively easy to overlook or forgive since the set retains a "once noble" air about it.
