Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the set.
Tales of Old Japan, by A. B. Mitford.
1871, London, MacMillan and Co. First Edition.
"Signed" bindings by Root of England.
Period full polished leather bindings. Spines gilt decorated and lettered, boards with double gilt rules in outline, turn-ins nicely gilt stamped with running patterns. Marbled end papers, top edges gilt, illustrated throughout.
Joints cracked and slightly weak, stained and weakened, but still firmly holding, tiny chipping to head of vol. 2, lacks contrasting title labels in second compartment which is easy to overlook or forgive (see pics & video). Leather remains supple, pleasing overall shelf appearance and age patina to set despite any flaws with condition.
Clean, tight and sound internally.
Books measure: 8 1/8" H X 5 1/2" W.
