Alligator & Iguana & Chameleon &c. fine 1808 vintage old printBrian DiMambro- Antique & Vintage Maps, Prints, Books & Gold Coins
Issued New York: 1808.
Engraved by Thenchard.
Appealing and uncommon early-19th century engraved print.
The assemblage of images in this manner is entirely unique to this era of pictorial representation in the history of American engraving.
This type of engraved printing process was very difficult and laborious, involving long-apprenticed, highly trained skillful pictorial artisans. It also involved challenging hand-operated machinery, tricky manual tasks such as proper inking of plates, sheets of hand-made paper individually hung to dry, skill in all aspects of production, patience, and other endless tasks and labors. Because of these and various other historical factors, this printed leaf is an interesting original artifact from long past moment in printing upon paper.
