(Woman Scrubbing Another Woman's Feet- Woman Playing Harp- Government Scene- Nudity)
Engraved by H. Winkles
Printed ca. 1854-6, Germany
Fascinating and utterly masterful original antique engraved print. In our opinion, approaching the pinnacle of the engraved plate craft for this era & country.
A very high level of precision miniature engraving technique is on display within this masterful image. The engravers and printers ability to render this image with such a range of details in contrasting tones is nothing less than marvelous to the appreciating modern eye.
Extracted from a now rare mid-19th century visual encyclopedia at a unique conceptual moment now frozen in time and perfectly captured here. The images, iconography and their method of representation would never occur anything like this today. Not only because virtually none of what is seen exists any longer, but also it's a method of seeing which no longer exists. It's like a snap-shot photograph, but 25 times technically more difficult, since every single line seen had to be engraved on the metal plate by a skilled and patient hand. Time to get the magnifying glass out.
The visual presentation and manner of arrangement is entirely unique for this topic/ subject being covered. A precise clean detailed engraving technique combined with expert printing results in a very appealing antique image well worthy of display.
In Average or better than Good antiquarian condition, mostly clean overall, light age dustiness or light surface wear, and some light to moderate scattered foxing as you can see from the scan, overall the image is attractive -- Printed on quality period paper, as issued, which shows typical gentle signs of age, some minor light spotting or foxing, but retains its soundness. Despite any small age flaws the sheet may display, the printed area remains fresh, clean and visually pleasing. The print is well preserved.
A fine old print in hand which is a pleasure to examine in detail.
Please inspect enlargeable photo closely - Any noteworthy flaws to the printed surface area should be noticeable within zoomable picture provided.
[note: We grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws. We are doing our best to show & describe this item so you are happy when it arrives].
Overall a nice impression of an original and interesting antique printed image that any collector, institution or person of good taste would be happy to own.
