Andrew Johnson 1897 antique BEP portrait printBrian DiMambro- Antique & Vintage Maps, Prints, Books & Gold Coins
(United States President)
Issued Washington D.C.: ca. 1897,
almost certainly by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving & Printing.
Beautifully engraved late-19th century engraved portrait print, done by the same organization that prints U.S. currency.
The precise, detailed & nuanced engraving style epitomizes a particularly fine visual aesthetic quite unique to this moment in engraving.
This type of richly contrasting light & dark engraved printing process was very difficult and laborious, involving long-apprenticed highly trained skillful pictorial artisans.
