Smooth leather spine splendidly gilt decorated in scrolled outline and foliage linear patterning, covers display a unique diagonal embossed plaid patterned cloth, marbled end papers. Two fine steel engraved portraits within.
Excellent, skilled and unique artistic mid-19th century American leather binding, well preserved with fine age patina.
Each monthly issue shows faint light signs of original mailing through post folded in half, thus sent directly to this early owner who then took them to his local binder for binding up in this fancy octavo format. Binding is a unique style from this particular anonymous bindery.
Binding lightly scuffed, stained or soiled in spots, leather supple, gilt bright, tight, light internal foxing, beautiful survival.
