Book Box with Secret Compartment with mid-18th century travel account of Japan.
Pair of old full leather books, both mid-18th century Europe.The travel account is devoted entirely to a detailed description of japan.
Attractive shelf appearance, compartments gilt decorated, one of the books actually a box on the inside- hollowed out and lined with matching old marbled paper long ago.
Both show signs of time and age, book box has front joint well cracked but still firmly held by sturdy original binding cords, but remain sound, tight and attractive on the shelf.
