Issued New York, 1864 by J.H. Colton. [imprinted 1856, but this example a later revised state].
Lovely mid-19th century antique engraved map with original hand color. Large detailed inset of Republic of Nicaragua lower left. Small inset city plans of Aspinwall city on Manzanilla Island and Panama as well as the harbor of San Juan de Nicaragua).
Scarce Civil War era imprint. Full page of various types of 1860 detailed statistics about West Indies printed on the back, including discussions of the native inhabitants, aborigines, industry, commerce, shipping, geology, botany, politics, climate, etc.
Colton as well as Johnson and Mitchell regularly updated their map plates during this period and as such there are numerous variants of this fine state map, differentiated by emerging counties, extended rail line connections, newly formed town names and so on.
In VG or better condition, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, overall the sheet and printed image remains clean and well preserved.
