(China- Caricature, Chinese, Jewish noses stereotypes- pictorial cartoon racism).

Stunning and very scarce original antique periodical color lithographed print.

Issued 1884, Paris, by La Caricature, journal.

Art by A. Robida.

Theme involves Jules Ferry, then President du Conseil of France. Scene refers to Southeast Asia, specifically the Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam, where the French had colonial possession interests at this time. There was the pending Chinese conflict and this French protectorate was a popular public issue of discussion among the elite. Hence this remarkable depiction capturing the artists (and presumably the publics) sentiment.

Rare printed image which exaggerates the stereotypical long Jewish nose with cartoonish Chinese Mandarin costumes.

The clearly ethnic stereotypical Chinese ladies contrasts with the minstrel show-like visual costume parody involving Ferry.

A lovely printed sheet, found here folded as issued (outter wrappers of the journal, so to speak), inside printing includes a wonderful silhouette song story, plus great pictorial period advertising which captures the feel of the era.

Sheet measures c.  15 1/2" H x  11" W.

Printed area measures c. 10 7/8" H x  8 7/8" W.
