Carte Generale de la Crimee

(General Map of Crimea)

Issued 1858, Paris by Logepot Editeur, 55 Quai des...

Printed by Lemercier

Engraved by F. Delamare

Undeniably scarce original antique lithographed map. Printed in a fine large format, with an abundance of detail, the sheet measuring almost 2 feet across.

An exceptionally uncommon map relating to the Crimean War issued shortly after its conclusion. Only infrequently found in as overall nice a state of clean preservation as this.

A large detailed panoramic birds-eye view of Sebastopol at top right corner. Within this fine view numerous features are readily identifiable, including tall masted ships, the major fortresses & their walls, many city details, etc.

An extensive key below the title at left identifies a further multitude of details. The land is shown with extensive topographical detail, with roads, walls, specific buildings, terrain elevations, etc., the coastal water hand-colored blue-green. The attacking navel positions are shown, as are defenses, key travel routes, etc.

In Good+ or (much) better condition. Entirely acceptable example for any collection. Well preserved for such an inherently fragile large folding format which only appeared in a now very elusive [ rare ] and little known source. A mostly clean example, any age faults being minor and inoffensive visually.

Wear to sheet: minor light surface age wear, some scattered foxing across the map, couple minor splits or short edge tears (now either closed or unworthy of attention, some normal soft fold impressions across locations on the sheet (as always), some blank marginal edge spotting, some thin light browning to some fold-lines.

Overall the map remains attractive and will look lovely once framed and on display [note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws].

The printed area remains visually pleasing, a nice impression of an interesting and scarce antique map.

Any minor defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may hopefully be seen in the photos.

Sheet measures c. 22 5/8" W x 18 3/8" H.

Engraved area measures c. 19" W x 15 1/8" H.
