to the Mud Lakes
From Explorations and Surveys Made Under the Direction
of Hon. Jefferson Davis Secretary of War
By Capt. E.G. Beckwith
(California / Oregon / Pacific Northwest / etc.)
Issued Washington, D.C., 1855 by U.S. Government.
Engraved by Selmar Siebert.
Fine and uncommon 19th-century lithographed map. Captures this area of the American West with a level of detail and accuracy previously unseen.
Map remains well preserved. Some light age wear or surface spotting / soiling which is visible within the photograph.
Like all U.S. government maps issued for the explorations surrounding the search for railroad routes across the country, this map was printed on a relatively thin and fragile paper. This paper is now age-toned along the fold lines, and must be handled with care.
Original fold lines as issued; map appears to have rarely been unfolded over the years.
Sheet measures c. 19 3/4" W x 22 1/4" H.
Printed area measures c. 17 3/4" W x 20 1/2" H.
Wheat, Mapping Transmississippi West , 824 (noting how all the RR survey maps are printed on fragile paper which simply does not hold up well and is often found with tears and deterioration).
