London, c.1850-60, The London Printing and Publishing Company. 2 volumes, complete with 2 Tallis maps and 70 wonderfully engraved view plates, + 2 engraved portraits.
Vol. 1 contains 36 steel engraved view prints and a Tallis map of Northern Italy drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin with original hand color.
Vol. 2 contains a further 36 steel engraved prints and a Tallis map of Southern Italy drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin with original hand color and five vignettes of people and views.
Excellent 19th century 1/2 leather bindings. Raised bands, compartments ornately gilt decorated and lettered, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Most engravings signed in plate by engraver. Signed binding by Pfister Co., London. Joints a bit rubbed and scuffed, otherwise set overall remains clean, fresh, tight and sound. Handsome bindings which have aged well, and small flaws are easy to overlook and forgive.

A monumental and heavy set, with excellent views by some of the best engravers of the era. Many images displaying exceptionally fine ranges of tonality and contrasts between lights and darks. A splendid plate book in a wonderful deluxe "signed" early binding.
