Levant Athens Turkey Dardanelles 1817 Kelly 4 fine engraved print viewsBrian DiMambro- Antique & Vintage Maps, Prints, Books & Gold Coins
(Levant- Greece- Athens- Turkey- Dardanelles- Asiatic Europe)
Issued c. 1817 & c.1830-40, London by T. Kelly.
Nice lot of four (4) early 19th century engraved prints.
Two nearly identical images, in pairs, each with different printings. Variant issues of the same image by the same publisher, published c.15-20 years apart.
The later issue of each image is clearly based on the earlier one. It's very difficult to discern whether the later plates are only re-worked by an early engraver, or are entirely separate plates created by different engravers. There are many variations visible upon close examination, for instance the sky areas, water, vegetation, shading, shadowing, etc.
However, the precisely similar outline placement for most of each variant print suggests the strong possibility the original plate has only been burnished and vastly re-worked by an early engraver to prolong it. (Also, likely cut down along top and right side as well on the Athens image).
Either way, an interesting snapshot into how two different signed individual engraved plates may have evolved differently within the same publishing firm over time during their working life.
Two views are:
Ruins of Athens.
View in the Levant.
Both well preserved, minor age toning or spotting, any age flaws or condition issues are minor and easy to forgive or overlook.
Sheets all measure approx. 8" x 10 1/2".
Printed areas measure c. 51/2" x 7 1/2".
