Period full "leather" bindings, ornately gilt decorated spines and front covers, all edges gilt. Profusion of illustrations throughout the set, including reproductions of letters, important historical documents, portraits, key buildings, etc.
Set remains very attractive and well preserved. Clean set inside and out, contents uniformly tight, sound and free of flaws.
Bindings all sound and tight, minor chipping to a couple volumes at spine ends, one short joint split, couple small holes at base of one joint. Great impressive shelf appearance, nicer than typical survival for a set more often encountered in poor condition or lacking the index vol.
