(Urban birds-eye views of 19th century- Panoramic prospect views)
Designed, engraved and issued 1868, NY by The New York Manual.
Wonderful mid-19th century engraved print. Fine antique birds-eye view, well printed with great nuance and virtuosity. Richly inked plate contrasts between light and dark, intricate and delicately engraved decorative scroll border, many locations identified across the top and bottom of the view, stunning level of detail and shadowing.
Original fold-lines as issued, left side margin trimmed narrow at bottom also as issued to facilitate folding (top left blank margin is inset tab). 4" closed tear from left inset tab (as typical), backed with archival rice paper and of minimal visual concern or distraction.
Under magnification the detail is close to astounding: virtually hundreds of individual buildings with countable windows rendered, specific top hat clothing styles can be discerned in the people shown bottom left, animals grazing almost invisibly within the meadow, individual sail arrangements on distant ships, you can count tiny trees in central park (you'd need a pin and patience to do it), etc. A master level of nuanced engraving, the pinnacle of the possibilities of the art form at this time on steel for this pictorial form.
